Why Hire a Book Editor?
Have you written a book, but you’re not sure what to do next? Whether you’re planning to self-publish or dreaming of landing an agent and a traditional publishing deal, it’s important to make sure your manuscript is as polished and professional as possible before sharing it with the world. The last thing you want is for someone to read it and think it’s just not as good as it could have been, or to be distracted by typos or punctuation errors. Every book can benefit from a fresh set of eyes providing corrections and guidance.
Why Choose Amy Miller Writing Services?
There are a lot of editors out there, and choosing the right one for your project can be overwhelming. Because of the time it takes to edit an entire book, hiring an editor is a major investment. You should feel confident in your decision, and choose someone you’re comfortable working with.
Although I’ve never worked for a publisher, I’ve loved reading and writing since I was a kid. I have a BA in English literature from Amherst College, where I analyzed the classics and passed my comprehensive exams with distinction. Since then I’ve revised my own manuscript extensively, and for the past four years have been part of a critique group that gives and receives monthly feedback. I’ve attended writing conferences and taken writing courses, and am an active member of SCBWI (the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators). I’m the kind of person that cringes when I catch 2-3 typos in most books I read, and I’m ready to put that perfectionism to work for you!
But I’m also approachable, kind, and excited to help improve your manuscript. If you hire me to be your editor, there’s no need to be intimidated. I know firsthand how vulnerable it feels to share your writing with someone else, especially when you’re asking for feedback. I promise to treat you and your book gently while doing all I can to help ensure your future readers will love it.
Book Editing Services Offered
I now offer a wide range of editing services, from suggesting big picture improvements to plot, character, and structure down to focusing on the prose itself. I also do proofreading if you want a quick once over to catch any errors.
NEW – Custom Revision Plan
If you wrote a book during the internet’s favorite November writing challenge, I’m offering 10 writers feedback on their manuscript and advice on how to tackle the revision process. Find out more and reserve your slot today!
Developmental Editing
I’ll read your entire book and discuss strengths and weakness in plot, character, structure, and voice. I’ll point out anything that’s confusing or could be further developed and make suggestion on how to improve the story. I’ll be sure to tell you what I love as well!
Developmental Editing should be done before Line Editing or Proofreading, because most books need some major revisions before they’re ready for the next step.
Line Editing
Line Editing focuses on the writing itself. I’ll go sentence by sentence and suggest ways to tighten and improve the writing. I’ll point out passive voice and overused words and correct grammar and punctuation. The goal is to make sure the writing doesn’t detract from your story.
Proofreading
Proofreading is a final stage before a book is ready for publication, to catch and correct minor errors. Before we start working together, I’ll request a 5 page sample so I can recommend whether you’re ready for the proofreading stage or could benefit from line editing.
